"The dream"
The artwork is part of the series of works with the theme "Traditions and rituals of the St. Andrew" and represents one of the fortune-telling rituals practiced by young girls on St. Andrew's night. According to this tradition, young and unmarried girls had to sleep with a few grains of wheat under their heads in order to see their future husband in their dreams. The work is made in the mezzotint technique, an engraving on a copper plate, and is printed manually using a printing press.
Alina Ponomariov is an artist from Chișinău, Republic of Moldova, specializing in easel graphics and working with a wide range of engraving and printmaking techniques. Her artistic research draws heavily on anthropological studies of archaic practices from the Romanian cultural space. She has a deep affection for all things old — from houses, windows, and doors to songs and traditional recipes — discovering in them a genuine authenticity that she believes has been gradually eroded by industrialization and globalization.

Alongside her visual art practice, Alina is also passionate about documentary photography and is an active member of the RAW/Moldova group.
