"Tribe"
The action of “Tribe” unfolds in stark black and white, its simplicity amplifying the raw power of its imagery. Figures resembling monsters - exaggerated, childlike, and almost totemic - gather together in a loose formation. Their distorted shapes, wide eyes, and rough outlines suggest both menace and playfulness, evoking the spirit of naïve art. Without the distraction of color, the painting emphasizes contrasts: light and shadow, innocence and fear, humanity and otherness. Though primitive in execution, the work radiates a primal energy, as if tapping into an ancient, collective memory where monsters were part of the tribe - protectors, tricksters, or spirits of survival.
Daria Lupan is an emerging painter from the Republic of Moldova. Although she does not have formal art education, she cultivated her passion from a young age, with 2020 becoming the turning point that deepened her commitment to painting. She works primarily with oil and acrylics, mediums that match the fluidity of her imagination.
Daria considers the summer of 2021 as her artistic debut, marked by her first solo exhibition High Brain Activity in Chișinău, followed by a group exhibition in Venice the same year. After completing her Bachelor’s studies in Venice and spending a year traveling and teaching, she returned to Moldova in 2024, where she continues to develop her artistic vision — transforming inner images into intimate, painterly worlds.
